Tanzania is among the countries with mega-biodiversity. It has several biosphere reserves, world heritage sites and protected areas. These constitute 35.6 percent of the territory. These areas are conserved through the concept of landscape conservation for endangered species.
Speaking at the high level segment of the eleventh Meeting of the conference of parties to the convention on biological Diversity held in Hyderabad India, Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office – Environment Dr. Terezya Huvisa said more effort is needed to reduce biodiversity loss. “We need to strengthen the implementation linkages between the three Rio Conventions on Biodiversity, Climate change and Desertification”.
She said, issues of bio-energy can play an important role in fulfilling the basic energy needs. However, scientific guidance is needed to ascertain the potential impacts of bio-fuels production on biodiversity as well as on socio-economic conditions, land and food and nutritional security and its compatibility with the Rio + 20 outcomes.
However, challenges of increasing poverty and climate change are undermining the efforts of the custodians of biodiversity. The linkage between poverty, biodiversity loss and climate change need to be adequately understood and addressed.
Dr. Huvisa urged for least developed countries and small Islands including developing states to address biodiversity conservation.
“We expect developed countries and financial institutions to make their commitments for the successful implementation of the Convention’s objectives” she added.
